Madrid: How to travel through the city

I arrived at Barajas airport, what next?

The Barajas airport isn’t that far from the city center. There’s different options to get to the city center:

  • Taxi’s charge fixed fee of €30 for trips from and to the airport. A single trip takes you around 20 minutes.
  • Metro line 8 stops between all airport terminals and connects with all other important metro lines. Metro line 8 brings you to the city center in less than 30 minutes. A single trip can cost up to € 4,5; you might want to consider a multi-day pass.
Make sure you know from which terminal your flight departs. Airlines do not always clearly advertise which terminal to go to. Getting of the metro at the wrong stop will make you lose a bit of time (since you either have to walk to the right terminal or wait for the next metro).

Favorite city transportation in Madrid

1.     Metro

Madrid has a large, clean, well maintained and very organized metro network. All important sites and places can easily be reached using the metro. Some tips when you consider taking the metro:

  • Think about the frequency of travel; it can save you a lot of money. A single trip on the metro starts from €1,5; a 1-day metro pass costs around €9 (there’s formula’s for other length of days too). Metro passes can be bought at any large metro station. Only buy a day-pass ticket for “Zone A”, not sure why a tourist would travel outside zone A.
  • Be sure to download the official metro app. The app does a lot more than just showing the metro map, for example: one of the features enables you to discover the best route between two status. What I like most about the app is that it also contains a touristic map!
  • Although there are many metro stops, be prepared to walk quite a bit. Not all sites and attractions are right at the entrance of a metro stop.

2.     Taxi

There’s more than enough taxi’s in the city. As in any other place in the world, taxi’s with a green light can be stopped at will. Taxi’s start driving for around €3. A regular taxi drive will cost you anywhere between €15 & € 40. After 9 in the evening taxis do charge an additional fee.

3.     Bus

Why would you take the bus if there’s such a good metro network? If you wish to use the bus network anyways: you can use your metro ticket for the buss too.

4.     Bike

Madrid is a bit hilly, there’s no really steep streets however. Nevertheless, renting bikes is becoming more and more popular these days. This is probably due to the fact that more and more roads are being adopted to accommodate cyclists, pedestrians and car drivers are not really used to cyclists yet; so be aware of your environment at all times.

Rent an electric city bike at any of the +160 cycle stations in the city. You can either buy a single ticket (around €2 an hour) or buy a multi-day pass.
